Kitchen design

  1. https://my-kitchen.howdens.com/plan/jxC20011021341Ji Would you wonderful people please look over my kitchen plan and give feedback I’m not happy with the dead space next to the ovens, I need a tall unit next to the sink as I have a SVP and it’s over 4 metres so need a break in the worktop.
Maybe, just once, someone will call me 'Sir' without adding, 'You're making a scene.'

    What's an SVP?
SoIl vent pipe.  It can be disguised in other ways.  I'd much rather box it in tight and plaster it neatly than have an entire random larder unit.  It doesn't work, not between two windows.  It's blocking light and looks contrived.   The boxing,
done correctly, could be as tight as about 20cm x 20cm.   You could disguise it a bit with a wall unit if you want, but it won't be noticeable in the grand scheme.

Worktops - joins can be really well
hidden.  Even with granite or quartz, the join can be discreet.  If one were to opt for a manmade solid surface like Minerva or Mirostone, then you'd never find it.     The larder unit is a lot less discreet!

Do you have a floorplan of the ground floor?

Are the eye level ovens a must?

I'd consider putting them side by side under the hob and have a larger hob straddling them.   That makes a nice feature, then you can have a neat run of larder units on the one wall without the worktop running round the corner.

Or, I'd forget going round the corner and keep the ovens, but have four 600mm tower units that are symmetrical.  You can get oven trays over to the main worktop run under the windows -  you don't have to have worktop immediately next to them.

Corner units are lousy.  I don't think it's worth going round the corner there by the ovens.

Where do the 3 doors lead to? One I assume will be the hall / living area, one perhaps an outside door, but the third?

Eta: I'd be interested in the quote they gave you for this design.

  • Thanks for the feedback Dozzergirl apparently we need two ovens at eye level even though the family have moved out because we are getting old and bending down is hard!? Agree about tower unit next to sink don’t look right, we have decided on concrete effect 20mm laminate so the join isn’t going to be perfect she may be persuaded to have solid laminate but I will have to work on that!
Rosa the Three doors are dining room, outside and understairs.
we have needed a new kitchen for ten years as a carpenter I would like something nice to invite clients round to see my work however my wife is the kind of client you would just doodle in your note book until your tea goes cold then block her number.
At this stage it’s 9 k including appliances but I will see what Diy kitchens adds up to!

If you want a double oven I'd have them stacked and use the tower as a pantry. Keep that run alongside the windows as workspace, you can always have a cabinet / shelves on top if you wish. As for the bare wall, think about whether open shelves / 300width tall units might be an option? You could get your cleaning products in there (broom, mop, stick hoover, ironing board etc).

Where are the outside walls? Is there more than one?

  • Rosa it’s the hardest thing ever! I can always picture things in my mind but not this, as you know it has to be right!

Yes in my dodgy drawing we have two windows and on the return a back door
