Hi,
Will admit I'm also just as much curious as about when you should scale up a business, aware that some businesses don't last 2 years.
I work for a very small company in a saturated industry in a basic role, whilst it is coming up to surviving it's 1st year, some days busy, others far from, it is not phones ringing of the hook, so I'm not convinced there is enough work for two, though I'm losing the battle to have another colleague join, due to reasoning of what happens if I want holiday.
There is some apprehension due to what happened in another workplace when someone was taken on who didn't want/couldn't do the job, but equally I'd feel awkward and wrong at this time if I have to go along with this is a super job that doesn't really require the same prospect called like 5 times a day.
If you take on to many staff so quickly, can that be trouble?

You can scale up too quickly, but the limit is very high. I worked for a company that doubled in size every year for 10 years! The comments I post are my personal opinion. While I try to check everything is correct before posting, I can and do make mistakes, so always try to check official information sources before relying on my posts.1

If some days are far from busy, why would you want to scale up?

As an employee you have statutory rights to annual leave. Covering while you absent is the management's problem.1
