iPhone sending to different number within a contact?

In my mothers iPhone under her entry for me she has 2 numbers - personal mobile marked as home and my works mobile marked as work. For long enough it's been working fine. If she's needed to call me on my works mobile then the call has come through fine enough. Any texts she sends to me have always gone straight through to my personal mobile. All good.
For the record, we're not talking about WhatsApp for any of this.
This week though she text me and the first text came through on my personal phone but half hour later the same text came through on my works phone.
Basically she was picking up a bit of food shop for me as she was out anyway and then she text me what I owed her, but to my works phone. I text her from my personal phone on my break saying she really should text that info to my personal phone. She responds saying she is texting my personal phone - but this lands at my works phone.
I text back telling her she needs to stop texting as for some reason it keeps landing at my works phone.
She texts back :-/ saying she's not been texting my works phone and she'll show me after work - which once again lands at my works phone.
When I get to my mothers I see on her phone that she has my numbers listed as I stated above and as far as her text message history goes for me, everything looks normal on her end.
Why would it randomly start sending to my works phone?
We're getting round it now by creating an additional contact for my works number rather than having 2 numbers within the 1 contact but it doesn't get round the fact that it should be able to just send to the default number as, well, default?

Sounds like iMessage is configured, that is based on the Apple user account on each phone rather than the number - do you use the same Apple account on both your work and personal?

Or ... I recall from previous threads that you have a Samsung as your personal phone; is your work phone an iThing? If yes then it may be defaulting to iMessages (as suggested above).
Splitting the work number out as a separate contact, as you have done (although it shouldn't be necessary to do so), would seem the sensible workaround.Jenni x0 -
Yep, as Jenni says - my personal phone is a Samsung. Good memory there.Any idea why all of a sudden it has randomly just started sending via iMessage then? I don't even think I have iMessages turned on on my phone as the texts received don't show as blue, they show green - and everyone at work is on iPhones.0
