I’ve just exchanged on selling my flat in London after being here for 5 years (and in London for 10). I’m a countryside person at heart and told myself I would only do 3-4 years in London just to get my career started, so I’m quite proud of managing 10! I’m moving in with parents temporarily while I buy a house somewhere in the Basingstoke to Andover region.

I have never lived here before but chose it because 1) it’s commuting distance to both London and Bournemouth, where my firm has offices (will likely be doing 2/3 days in London each week and the others working from home, but want the flexibility to transfer to the Bournemouth office in the future if we ever have to go back to 5 days a week - unlikely), 2) train goes to Waterloo which is an easy onward commute by tube and 3) my brother already lives in Andover and is expecting his second child, so I want to be closer to them to help with babysitting etc. I’d also be much closer to the rest of my family.

So all that considered, I’d really appreciate advice from anyone on particular areas to look at / avoid. My brother already warned me off the King Arthur’s side of Newbury Road in Andover… for reference I am looking for a 2-3 bed semi/detached/end terrace up to 370k, but I’m seeing some houses e.g. under 250k which would be amazing, but I’m worried I’d end up in an awful area, and these things can be difficult to gauge if you’re only visiting a handful of times for viewings etc.

Thanks!

You might want to consider Salisbury area too. Lots of pretty hamlets and villages around there. Good luck!

Having lived on both of these towns ....

Andover - Saxon fields or some of the newer estates up by picket piece are nice as is Charlton and abbots Ann.

Basingstoke - Hatch Warren, Kempshott, Beggarwood, Oakley to the south and chineham, lychpit, old basing to the north.

    Hope this helps 🙂

I used to live in Basingstoke and second n0438s list. I lived in Beggarwood which was ideal to get on the M3.

I would avoid Popley and the Hams.

Between Basingstoke and Andover are Overton and Whichurch which both have stations for trains to Waterloo and would be worth considering.  I''d go for one of those over the larger towns.  The A34 provides a fast route south towards Bournemouth that you want to be able to reach easily.

I've been living in Andover for the last 3 months.  I've not been here long enough to know any areas to avoid, but I'm on the south side of Andover, not far from Ladies Walk (which you must walk along if you decide to live here :-) , and its nice quiet roads around here. Only 20mins walk into the shopping centre.  Trains are regular to Waterloo (1hour 10mins average)
