The best insecticide for ants?

I'm after an insecticide, the best one to kill ants which are not swarming the kitchen. The last time I had an ant problem a local pest control specialist came out and sprayed something, not sure what it was but a week later all the ants were gone. He used a sprayer and what looked like 10l bottles and charged me £120 - which I thought was a fair price for the time taken and the work done. But if I can get a hold of something similar I'd like to do it myself as it wasn't too difficult what he was doing.

Powders are useless, the ants will just find another way in. I need something that will make them carry the stuff back to the nest.

  • I've had good results with Ant Stop granules.  It looks like sugar, and works in the manner that you describe, the ants take it back to the nest and kill off the colony.
Nippon claims to do the same, but has never really worked for me.

I've used Nippon gel dripped into ant traps.
Very cost effective and can be used the following year.
When I had them coming in the house I found they had burrowed through the mortar under the patio window frame. It was a pain of a job but I dug down about 10" and remortared 3 layers of bricks, mixing ant powder into the mortar.
I also took up the paver slabs where they had established runs and used powder, Jeyes fluid (they don't like strong smells) and bleached any area I saw them leaving trails.
2yrs and so far, so good :)

I can rise and shine - just not at the same time!

Nippon liquid used to be the go to product for me for this
Once 2 or 3 of them found it the jungle telegraph would be working and they would swarm round it

Twice this year tried it and both times didn't see that effect, not sure if its gone off or formula has changed, had to resort to powders - although which actually killed them in the end I don't know

But definitely didn't seem as attractive to them as in past as I recall

Ant Stop every time. The granules if you can locate the nest or the bait stations. The ants love it and take it back to the queen in the nest which will kill the whole colony off, works every time and within a day or two.

The Nippon ant bait stations have always worked for me.

I always feel guilty though that they're excitedly going home with their new bounty and killing their family and mates!
  • Thank you all for the replies. I have ordered 2 ant stop bait stations, which come Tuesday I hope. In the meantime I've built a wall on the back door where they appeared to be sneaking in through and that has stopped them for the time being. If there's one thing I have learnt about Ants, it is that they will always find another way. So I have to get them to take the bait back to the nest.

It was horrid looking at my kitchen yesterday, this line of black on white walls and doors. Let's hope the ant stop bait works.

They are pretty clever beasties. I suggest you don't watch the movie Phase IV 😉
