New rules since Brexit transitional period finished.  No longer a minimum limit.
China isn't in the EU last time I checked.
No but the tax was not payable while U.K. was in the EU.

“From 11PM 31 December 2020, AliExpress is required by law to collect UK Value-Added Tax (VAT) at the applicable rate and remit to the UK tax authority when goods are sold to UK customers”
Poor old AliExpress. Another unpaid tax collector. I am surprised that the UK is telling a Chinees company what to do, or that AliExpress is even collecting for them. Surly they could say, " you collect it", the UK. If i buy from the states, i get an invoice from the UK  customs.
Yet i also notice Banggood doesn't charge these taxes, yet seem a similar set up. But are in collaboration Huawei on this venture. Mabey Huawei has more clout. lol
Every VAT registered UK business is an unpaid tax collector!
    So is every employer.

the above link eplains that if they want to sell on a marketplace to Uk they must sign up. It also advises the action HMRC CAN   can take if they don't.

Of course, they could choose not to sell to UK  if they don't want to, but it appears this company are happy to do so.
