Shower area tiling

Options
I am looking to tile my new shower area and been advised it needs be water proofed before the tiles go on. The walls will get tile backer board prior to tiling.

So i have found these two products which seem to do the same thing. What is the difference between the two and what do I need?

"The walls will get tile backer board" - Have a look at Marmox / Jackoboard and others as these only need the joints waterproofing and you can use a special self adhesive tape. Who advises it needs waterproofing and why? Are you doing it yourself? Are they stud or solid walls? Tiles over shower tray or is it a wet room / area?
Sorry I can't think of anything profound, clever or witty to write here.

Those products are for wet rooms.   Are you wet rooming it?

Other than the cost investment, is there any harm in going belt and braces rather than regretting later?

They are not just for wet rooms, they are used for shower walls too.

No, but the weakest point is always going to be the join between the tray and the wall and you can't really use that stuff in that way at that point to create a continuous waterproof barrier in the way that you can with a wet room, where the barrier goes over the tray.

We've fitted goodness knows how many showers over the years and never felt the need to waterproof over the whole board if it's being tiled to a shower tray, nor have we ever regretted it later.   Of course it won't hurt, but I'd probably go the whole hog and make a wet room if I felt it needed nearly a whole wet room kit.

If using plasterboard or the hardiebacker board type of board they should be tanked. If using the Jacko board, Wedi board type you only need to tape the joints. This is on shower walls not just wet rooms

Plasterboard, even the moisture resistant type, shouldn't be used in a shower area or wet room (my opinion).

It’s fine as long as it gets tanked
