Hi,

I've had Windows 10 Pro for a few months now and recently have noticed some weird issues.

The computer partially locks up every now and then, it generally tends to affect the browsers (Firefox, Chrome and Edge all the same) but if I go into task manager and close something down (it doesn't seem to matter what I close down, obviously I am careful not to close anything important) then everything goes back to normal.

Also the browsers seem to randomly launch new tabs when I am moused over a tab, sometimes it randomly closes tabs.

I've run a virus scan, nothing, malware scan, nothing, windows updates, it is fully up to date.

Any ideas?

Cheers,

David

When you go to Task Manager, and before you close anything down, what is your memory utilisation?

Also, what have you set your paging file to? If 'system managed' then that is OK, but if to a fixed size you could try increasing it.

Getting Firefox opening new windows at odd moments. Sometimes I wonder if i had hit the CTRL key instead of shift
but the other day I was typing into a google search all in lower case and another Firefox window opened. Only started
after the Windows update a couple of weeks back.

Where do I find that?  I can see the memory usage for Firefox is a rather chunky 2.5 Gb, I've got 16 Gb RAM so is that an issue?

The "performance" tab show 7.3 Gb memory used out of 15.9 Gb

Is this what you mean about system managed?

  • What's your hardware - is it new old etc? Spinning hard disk or SSD?

Your symptoms have some of the classic signs of spinning hard disk have problems reading bad sectors causing applications to hang whilst it re-tries reading them.

Random tab opens / close when mouse over - is there a button stuck / dodgy on the keyboard or mouse?

yes that is what I meant. Your symptoms were a classic 'running out of memory' problem

if you have 16gb of memory it is unlikely to be that though.

It's worth running a sfc. It only takes a few minutes and sometimes even an update can knock a system file out of place.

Thanks, the disc check didn't return any issues.

    It's a newish PC, 1TB SSD.

Mouse/keyboard seem fine, the issue is very intermittent, I can be using the PC fine for an hour or so before any problems begin.

Did you run a disc check or a system file check?

Sorry for not updating this but it turned out it was the mouse in the end and I wanted to give it a few days to ensure the issue had definitely gone with it being so intermittent.

I did consider that but the fact that doing an "end task" seemed to fix it foxed me somewhat, so thanks to those who suggested that.

Whilst the issue was solved, for future reference, when trouble shooting one should run Task Manager as an administrator as otherwise certain system and administrator processes will not show up.

I always have a Powershell console open, which makes it easier to manage processes.
