Cars need maintenance and a continuous cycle of tyres, exhausts, batteries, brake pads & discs, CV boots, Aircon regas, clutches. Unexpected things do go wrong but in my experience it's not necessarily linked to age. My current car has had more unexpected failures in the first half of its life than the second.

Then that's the end of this constant 'something needing done' crap.

Hope she doesn't smoke or you'll be needing a new one when the ashtray's full.

And you do know they need an annual service, probably much the same as the Mii required!

It’s a topical thread for me. I’ve had an 65 E Class sitting on my drive with barely 1,000 miles since last October MoT. I searched long for this car but just not using it. When I do drive it I’m keeping it, then I’m selling it. My son returned a car his mother gave him about 5 years ago, so that solves having a car when I need to use one. The sale of the Mercedes would be a good deposit for my Campervan.

WFH for 17 months, going P/T, so one trip at most to office per fortnight.

Decisions, decisions ? Listening to you folks it really should be away.

How much is it worth and how much are you paying to keep it?
Can you do those miles some other way?

I'd probably get rid and put it towards the camper which will barely move either :)

It's not just for you, it's for everyone!  Reduce, reuse and recycle, firstly.  Secondly, a moderately good car will easily last 20 years or so.  The sweet spot is one that isn't too complicated but wasn't too cheap in the first place.  The former tend to catastrophically break down and the latter sometimes don't have the durability to last the course.

All cars require maintenance and bangers don't necessarily need more than new cars.  Even if they do, things are usually far easier and cheaper to fix.  Bulbs, for instance, cost a few pounds for something like an old Focus but fixing headlights on new cars can cost hundreds of pounds.  The same goes for tyres and belts and so on.  You also might get lucky and not end up foisted with all the breakable electronic rubbish.

Another thing in favour is that older cars are exempt from the punitive car tax rules, so can save you hundreds of pounds a year.  Most petrols, even some quite old ones, are LEZ compliant.  There's also the matter of aesthetics.  New cars aren't the most attractive, and modern interior design has really gone to pot.

From recent threads on here, you can get something nice for far lower than the budget mentioned.
I can only recall an offer for the Skoda Scala.
A good offer, but it's not a car that an 18YO will want (nor me, to be frank).
Not anti-Skoda at all, it's just a boring looking car.

    Is that her choice?
Her old Mii or a Scala?
    No, so what's your point?
