Their Ts & Cs suggest it is only unused items in new condition that can be returned, yet posters here and elsewhere seem to return things after trying them out. Is it different for Prime members or something? TIA

The right to cancel your contract isn't linked to the condition of the goods (other than it being permissible for the retailer to make a deduction for diminished handling).
Amazon.co.uk does not comply the requirement to provide the required information and thus you have 1 year and 14 days beginning the day after delivery (or 14 days from the day after they do provide the required information) to cancel your contract and they aren't permitted to make a deduction.
Their 30 days returns policy is in addition to your consumer rights. In the game of chess you can never let your adversary see your pieces1
