Greek accommodation and payment despite flight cancellation

I paid €500 euros deposit for a villa in Greece but couldn’t travel because the flights were cancelled. We gave notice 26 days before arrival date). The villa owner wants to keep the €500 deposit plus 50% of the balance. There is no cancellation policy on their website. Do we have to pay it? They say this is Greek law. I would have thought 50% of the whole cost is fairer (€700 as opposed to €1000)

Unless you booked a package it's irrelevant that your flights were cancelled and you couldn't get there.

You booked accomodation and you didn't check what the cancellation terms for your booking is? If there is none it sounds like your booking was non-refundable.

It's not clear to me whether you have paid the balance or not and they are saying they will only return 50% or they are asking you to pay 50% of it?
