Demand for duty and VAT

I ordered from the EU back in April, the cost was £134.81 of which £22.49 was VAT.
The items were delivered with no hold or delay or charge at customs.
I returned one of the items valued at £44
I now receive a demand from DHL for £57.88 for import VAT and fees.

I was below the £135 threshold
The items were delivered with no charge for release
Why am I now getting a demand 3 months later threatening debt collection?

Where do I stand here?

Thanks

There is no £135 threshold now.
DHL don't hold until you pay, they pay customs charges on your behalf so you get the item quicker.

You need to ask the company why you were charged VAT at checkout and again by the courier - but if DHL have paid it to HMRC you'll need to pay first and contest it later.
There's also no £135 threshold, sorry.

VAT and Duty are not in any way a Consumer Rights matter.

Doing your own import paperwork is the most moneysaving way to deal with this as it would completely avoid any additional fees and limit you to just VAT/Duty, albeit at a slower delivery speed. Details have been here long since in appropriate forums/threads.
