It's not robbery, they're providing a service - look into the process to clear it yourself and you'll think their fee is a bargain.
It's common knowledge that couriers add a fee to process the VAT and duty payments - a little homework beforehand would have given you this information.

Sorry, but they're not going to remove it. They've done a job and need to be paid for it.
They've done a job I didn't ask them to do (and one that they should be doing anyway)

You did by not self clearing the goods. The law states they do it on your behalf.

So you expect FedEx to sort out all your import taxes for free?
I expect them to be included as part of the international postage cost.

How can FedEx justify a fee virtually equal to the hourly minimum wage just for calculating the tax duty on one package?
So if theres an item not requiring clearance. They should pay the same postage as you?
I suggest next time you do your own clearance given its 'just a case of calculating it'

That would require the exporter to know all import taxes and associated charges for every country they sell to. Import cost are for the importer to deal with.

Someone has to be at   customs to fill in the required forms .pay the money ( so in effect are loaning you the money) collect the parcel, take it back to the depot, process it through their system and pass it to the courier to deliver.

Quite a lot for an hour's minimum wage.

Could you go to customs and clear it yourself and travel home for that amount of money?
