Wow!  I assumed that when I took a round trip from Heathrow to Toronto Pearson that that meant the flight originated in the UK including the return leg.
no, the journeys are separate for the purposes of the regulations. OP would have been covered for the outbound journey as they were departing the EU but not the return

    Yes.

If (for example) I were to fly from Heathrow to my home country with BA, both legs would be covered, if I were to fly with the national carrier only the outbound leg would be under UK legislation.

Ukrainian law mirrors EU law (I can confirm this as I have some flights booked with a Ukrainian carrier over summer) and other countries have different protections, so OP may be covered by this.

I'm surprised nobody has asked who was the actual operating carrier? UK to US via Singapore is a very long way to go around the world. I'm guessing one of the US carriers, but it may have been an EU one such as Lufthansa Group or LOT.

"In October 2016 Singapore Airlines launched its first ever transatlantic service between the United Kingdom and the United States. The non-stop Manchester to Houston flight is the only direct service connecting Manchester with the state of Texas."

Oh, I didn't know that, so thanks.

Seems a very strange route for any carrier, let alone SQ to be operating.
