No he doesn't do sales and repairs but he normally owns a few cars all year round and if he hasn't got a car I can use whilst he fixes mine I can take one of his 3 vans, can't see what's unusual about the relationship. I have good relationships with lots of trades people, I got a top tyre guy, bike mechanic (although I've not used him in a while as my BMW bike is still under warranty) plumber/heating engineer, spark and general builder. It pays to know good people IMO.0

I've honestly never heard of a mechanic who'll loan out his own cars or vans to customers waiting on work, and I'm not even sure how the insurance would be handled.
If it was your friend first and happened to be a mechanic that'd make sense.
I've got a good contact for most trades, and will talk to them if I bump into them somewhere, but I don't think that level of relationship is common.
