'Someone' wanted me to scan 27 pages and email it to them!

I did it all on one .pdf which was 28.9MB but when I attached it to an email using Thunderbird, it suddenly became 38.7MB - why?

It then bounced as the recipients limit was 36MB

Make use of facilities like WeTransfer and Whatsapp or Google Drive for big files, email is not designed for whopping great files like that.

This happens whenever an attachment is added to an email. The whole email "package" has to be encoded for transmission and this increases the size of the original mail + attachment, typically 20 - 40%. 

Upload the document to the cloud and send them a link is the easiest way to get round email limits. 

If the recipient is a corporate, then incoming email size restrictions can be lifted temporarily by email admin techie.

Thanks all - we have concluded that we will put it on a memory stick and give it to her when I see her this afternoon!
