Glad it all worked out fine for you. Yes, if you come out of the wrong exit at Waterloo tube you get into their tunnel nightmare. You needed to find the way to the 'old' KX entrance, not the signposted route, and you would have found it rather shorter. But not to worry, you got there.

Yes, you can. If you arrive at St Pancras after the time of your onward booked train but if there is a wait before the next one, you may wish to seek staff endorsement, but this is not necessary and you should not do this if it would delay you further.

You can apply for Delay Repay compensation if you are sufficiently delayed

.... but in my case I have a nominal 52 minutes between arrival in Waterloo and Departure from StPancras.

As others have said, take the Bakerloo and change at Oxford Circus , as this is a very easy interchange

and have a few tube connections to make - so it could be quite debatable as to whether i miss the StPancras connection via delay or just a bad combination of tube stops and confusion on my part..

Not debatable; the delay to the first train can easily be checked
