A couple of years ago we have solar panels fitted - last year and this year we are been inundated with pigeons as they like the warmth of the panels they nest underneath and are causing such a mess on the carport and driveway with their droppings and the noise all day in unbelievable - A Shade Greener knew about the problems many years ago but did not put a netting around the panels they want to charge the following ---    £650.00 plus vat and then have to pay for scaffolding on top at a price of £500.00 plus vat

Total £1,150.00 plus VAT although after sending pictures of the roof they have now said that they would not need scaffolding, i have a company who can fit the clip on guard for 250.00 but we have to supply a method statement of how the guard will be fitted and if any damage is done i will be liable for the damage, i am in a catch w situation as i need work done on the roof as well, i find this all very stessfull as have just been recently widowed, they are holding householders to ransome

Just a tip and not advice, as I had this problem a few years ago. The solution is quite simple in most cases , but dotting "i's" and crossing "t's" is more challenging. Wire mesh properly secured is normally a sufficient deterrent to prevent pigeons gaining access and nesting underneath your array of panels. They are an absolute menace and could cause damage to your equipment as well as the other anti social aspects of their presence on your roof.

I decided to have a walk round my own locality to see who else had solar panels and which one's had protection from the pigeon menace. I discretely posted on local social media and a few notes through letterboxes to see what others had done.

The feedback was really helpful and I was put in touch with a local roofer who carried out the necessary work without scaffolding and certainly without a method statement at a very reasonable price. Some might say this is against the rules and maybe there is a risk to the householder in allowing such work to be carried out, but at the end of the day I was happy and the contractor was happy.

I can now wake up in the morning without the infernal cooing which became a real annoyance as well as the guano bombing of the property and any cars parked nearby.

  • I hope you don't mind me leaping on your thread but I'm having a somewhat similar problem with seagulls. I don't have solar panels but they're nesting every year on our flat roofs and the landlord won't pay for netting to be put up.
Does anyone know if ultra-sonic devices work, like this one, for example?

Other so-called bird scarers like fake owls, silver ribbon, etc that they sell on amazon would have little to no effect, I'm pretty sure.

Our work place installed those 'ultrasonic' devices and they made zero difference - other than irritating anyone under the age of 30.

We have a couple of green ones of those to deter pigeons - the results are inconclusive and the batteries last about two weeks!

I would say 'little difference' :)
