If I sign up to a new tariff with early exit fees will energy suppliers charge the fee if I die (to my estate obviously) before the contract has expired? Thanks

It may vary from supplier to supplier, but my understanding is that a contract is void on death.

I know for a fact that there are bereavement teams in place to help under these circumstances.

This thread is old, and it refers to eon, but the basic facts given correspond to my situation with British Gas a little while ago.

Death does not void all contracts or mortgages would be a bit of a problem...
The estate of the deceased remains liable for debts and termination fees are just another matter for the executors to deal with.
Different suppliers have different rules and accommodations, but as a minimum, yes, if the executors of the estate wish to terminate the service then they could incur an early termination fee for the estate.

The executors become responsible for the energy charges at the deceased's property. I still have in my late mother-in-law's probate folder the energy bills from Powergen in relation to her property. The are addressed to "Exors of Mrs Surname" at my address. I very much doubt whether any energy company would levy early termination charges in such circumstances.

Companies are at liberty to charge early exit fees on death but any that want to avoid bad publicity will waive the fee because enforcing the fee would look very mean-spirited if it were to become known.
