New computer stopped working

My old laptop threw a fit the other day, I got it back working but thought its time for a new one, got a Lenovo Yoga 7i that had good reviews on Which, got it click and collect from John Lewis because they give two year warenty. Brought it in tonight and set it up, installed firefox as browser and checked my passwords had come accross ok, saw it was still downloading some windows updates so just closed the cover and had dinner. Just went to check it now, but it would not read my fingerprint so used my pin and the screen opened to the background picture only, no icons or operation bar at the bottom, could move the mouse pointer but that was it, did control alt delete, got the menue and chose task manager but it only opened back to the same screen, did it again same result, cotrol alt delete again and tried the power button icon and chose restart, it showed the start screen withe the circle going round for about 30 seconds and shut down but no restart. restarted with the power button but with the same results. Will take it back to John Lewis in the morning. Cant think of anything else to try, Lenovo help is only Mon to Fri 8 to 6, going away to Scotland for a few days on Monday so hope the old one keeps going.

This'll be a software issue you can rectify yourself. Reset the machine, how should be in your documentation, typically you either press something during startup, hold an indented button or do something to reset it to the state it was in in the first place.  That's all JL will do, software issues are usually are usually not covered by any warranty.

    What about googling it?
    Something like:

That could get you a few ideas and might save you a trip back to JL tomorrow.

There are no instructions except battery disposal and layout, looked on google and there are just some complaints about overheating. Anther thing, using the packaging found a label from March when the unit was sent to Amazon and just after I finished installing it came on the screen thre was 8 months warrenty remaining starting from March. Just not happy with it and it's going back.

I can't understand why you closed the lid when it was downloading updates. This is where the problem lies.

Closing the lid shouldn't affect the updates.  Most laptops by default go to sleep when you shut the lid (number of times I've shut the lid down, came back the following morning and its only gone and restarted after an update), and its not entirely beyond the realms of possibility that somebody would do something relatively unexpected during updates and the system will try to recover.

if it can't, that normally means something unexpected has happened.  Its usually a software conflict.  anti-virus is good at doing this.

It really isn't recommended to put your computer into sleep mode right in the middle of a Windows update as the OP is now finding out.

Usually when it's updating there is a message "do not power off" there were no messages just the normal screen with icons and it was not showing any activity downloading, I just noticed it was showing that when I clicked on the notification icon bottom right on the taskbar but that message had been there all the time with some others that had ended

You can put the laptop to sleep at any time during the download / install  stage when it is downloading the updates and installing them - it will simply resume on wake up.

During the re-boot sequence (if any) where is says 'do not turn off the PC' then don't do it then.

I doubt if it's the OP's fault - the update has probably messed something up.

There should be a partition on your hard drive containing a recovery image that can be written back onto the c-drive so you can start again. Recovery will be initiated via a key sequence.

This is how to do it for one model - if this is not your model then try Google the find it

It could be because of the lid closing when updating as it can cause problems, not always but it's not a risk worth taking IMHO.

    BEWARE OF THE "REBOOT" REPERCUSSIONS

Whether intentional or accidental, your PC shutting down or rebooting during updates can corrupt your Windows operating system and you could lose data and cause slowness to your PC. This happens mainly because old files are being changed or replaced by new files during an update.
In most cases, closing the lid of your laptop is not recommended. This is because it will most likely make the laptop shut down, and shutting down the laptop during a Windows update can lead to critical errors.
