Gmail/Android presentation mystery

Until yesterday, when I tapped the Mail icon on my Motorola G7 Power I was presented with the usual list of emails in my primary inbox and I was a happy bunny.  Today, it's decided to be different.  Now when I hit Mail, I get a page with a colourful cartoony picture in the middle and it says "You've finished.  Nothing in Primary".

But if I go to the hamburger top left and tap on "All inboxes", up comes the exact page showing the emails in my primary account that I was expecting to see when tapping the Mail icon!

Can anybody please suggest what's happened, and how I might persuade Gmail to behave itself again?

in hamburger menu  scroll on down to very bottom.  then click settings

click on ur  email and adjust there
