Drinks out bill not split

I paid via card for what I thought would be a bill split after having drinks out with a friend.

Unfortunately having now checked my statement I see it's be said l who paid full whack.

Can I take this up with my bank or the venue?

When you pay by card the amount is shown on the card machine. What have the bank or venue got to do with your mistake?

Has the venue been paid 1.5x the bill, then?  i.e. your friend paid his half, then you paid the full amount?  Or is it a case that you've paid the full amount and your friend has paid nothing?  If the latter, that's for you and your friend to sort out.

Neither of the above - take it up with your friend. It's your responsibility to check the bill before paying.

Bit light on information.  Did you ask the venue to split the bill and did they agree to do so, or did they say they couldn't do that?

Did your friend pay as well?

What do you expect the bank to do?

Why do people not check the amount on the card machine before paying?
    I always do.

    Confusing first post.
We don't know if the OP paid in full or if he paid the full amount and the friend paid half.
Did the OP see his friend paying?

The first question is clearly to the friend and if they paid or not... hopefully this is an actual friend who'll answer honestly rather than a "friend" who may well say yes to get out of paying you back.

Clearly if they've not paid anything then the bills not split and its the friend that owes you monies (if they agree that the bill was to be split).

If the friend also paid then yes go back to the venue as between you it was overcharged.

If you were the only one charged then contact your friend and ask for the money from them.

For example if the bill was £50 and you paid £50 and the friend paid £0 then the friend owes you money.
If your friend paid £25 and you paid £50 the venue owes you £25.
If you both paid £50 each then the venue owes you both £25 each.
  • My friend hasn't seen any payment at all! I think the inexperienced bar staff some how messes up with the card machine...They were struggling with it at the time.

    Is there any recourse?

If you friend ended up paying nothing and you have paid the lot then ask your friend for their half? I suppose if your friend refuses then you have the recourse of small claims (although that might be overkill depending on the amount) I'm not sure what else you are looking for?
