Over 80, EU travel insurance?

Relatives with a villa in Spain used to “wing it” relying on EHIC cards with no travel insurance.

They used to stay for months at a time, but now are limited to a rolling 90 days. They are concerned that using an EHIC card for any medical issues might be more difficult than pre-brexit. They are considering travel insurance and have pre-existing conditions.

Checking SAGA, the cost was just under £2000 for one person, annual cover and limited to 120 days a year.

Staysure was recommended by an elderly friend, it was much cheaper but there were limitations for older travellers that looked like a 35 day limit.

I appreciate that insurance is both expensive and may not even be available for old people with health issues, but wonder if there are any reasonable deals for those with holiday villas who want to stay longer than a typical 2 week holiday trip.

Thanks

Have you looked at All Clear?
Though saying that times have changed since I did.
The combination of the virus and pre existing conditions could mean serious hospital treatment and long recovery so it's not going to be cheap.
On the other hand that's what you want the insurance for so it's going round in circles.
As for info for those with holiday villas have your relatives asked other expat owners what they have?
Or take a look at expat forums for the area. You may get some information posting there.
If they are living most of the time there there may be a Spanish company that would do the trick.

I can rise and shine - just not at the same time!

  • I’ll check out All Clear, thanks.

Regarding ex-pat villa owners, all their friends with villas are registered as residents in Spain and have transferred their NHS entitlement to Spain and so have the best of both worlds. Unfortunately these folks were always “holiday makers”, even though they spent nearly all year in Spain. They even managed to obtain free services from a local doctors practice. Now with covid and brexit, life for them has become a lot trickier and they really are just holiday visitors!
