Is it standard procedure to be asked the previous years earnings for a universal credit application?

Just applied for the first time and have been asked for my and my husbands monthly earnings for the past 12 months, is this to check we haven't deliberately deprived ourselves of savings as previously our earnings were well above the threshold until I left my job or is it just standard procedure?

It is to check whether you are exempt from the benefits cap. It is a standard question.

Thank you for your help, I didn't realise that went off prior months but we wouldn't be affected by the cap anyway :)

As advised it’s completely normal, it threw me when we were asked about them too.
