Student council tax recovery!

My Daughter shared a property for the last 2 years of university with 2 other students. They all finished Uni and left the property June 2020 and are now (a year later) being chased for a council tax bill of approximately £200. I am sure they shouldn’t have to pay anything as they where students can anyone offer any advice

When did she officially leave university and when did she move out of the property?
Did she inform the council she was leaving?

They were only students as long as they were undertaking a qualifying course of education - if this ended before their period of council tax liability ended then they would be responsible for the council tax charge.

There may also be issues of liability at the end of the tenancy.

I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.
