Is there a way to buy a car where the owner keeps their plates the same day?

A car that I'd like to buy (possibly) is currently sitting on a private plate, and I know to take it off, you apply online, pay your £80, the original number is immediately re-assigned, and a new log book follows.

However the down side to that if I'm right is that until that V5 comes through with the original number plate on it - there's nothing much can be done except wait?

Would I be right in saying that as soon as the online retention is complete - the existing V5 is then null and void from a sales perspective?

Am I missing something in any of the processes available that would let me drive it away the same day?

You'd want at minimum a further contract specifying the VIN number with the registered keeper, and if applicable the owner.

It would be easier for them to remove the plate before selling the car to reduce the amount of mess for you to clean up as a result of their lack of planning.

So you’re not even sure you want to buy the car yet you want to do the transaction on the same day if you do?

Why don’t you contact the seller to see if they’ll put the plate on retention in preparation for the day you may (or may not) purchase said vehicle.

Because I'd want to go there tomorrow - hence the question of not having to wait.... It's a relatively rare vehicle that if it ticks all the boxes I'd not say no - there's very few of this particular colour around - and it's a private sale... But if it's a case of I have to wait - then that's what'll be needed. I thought it might be the case - but worth asking in case there was a logical work around that I hadn't considered.

If the car has been advertised for sale, maybe the vendor is letting the plate go with the car?

    No - it's an expensive plate - he's definitely keeping it - he's already said :)

How far from you is the car?

Could the current owner drive the car to you on current plate, then take the plate off (online), then you leave the car on the drive until the new plate arrives (V5)?

Worcester / Cardiff - and have already sold my previous car - so if he did drive down, he wouldn't be getting back again :)

I think probably best to hang on - let him take it off - then drive it back once the log book arrives (and don't pay for it until that point)

    That'd be what I'd do.

What are you getting Chris, if it's not secret? (Sorry, secret petrolhead is taking over my electrohead (or whatever I can be called now driving an EV) tonight).

Something red..... That's all I'm saying until I've secured it. It could all fall through - so I don't want to jinx it :)
