NIP for alleged speeding

Hi all,
Some advice would be much appreciated.

I have just received a first ever NIP for apparently exceeding a 30 mile limit which occurred last week. I remember the exact day and time as I was driving on the road and could see the police van stationed on the pavement with its front facing me as I approached. Immediately I ensured that I was doing 30. As I passed the van. I saw the camera sticking out of the back of the van and checked my metre and it was definitely just below 30.

I was shocked to receive this letter last week saying I had done 37. Now there is a slight possibility that I was doing that as I approached the van but as I passed it and saw the camera in my rear view mirror, I was definitely below 30.

So my question is, do they have a camera facing towards on coming cars too? I definitely couldn't see it.
I don't think I was doing 37 as I approached the van anyway. Could it be that their equipment was faulty?

I will write back and identify myself as the driver of course but I was wondering what else I can do without jeopardising the possibility of being give a course rather than 3 points. Apparently if you make a fuss they will not offer the course and just issue 3 points? I have never had this in over 20 years of driving so I don't know.

Thanks

If you slow when you see the van its too late.

They aren't vans fitted with speed cameras, they use laser speed measuring equipment and can record speeds from hundreds of metres away.

The equipment can be set up to record from front or rear of the van.

Thanks. I feared that. I just hope they will offer me the course as it is my first ever offence.

    @71peyman71

The speed Rozzers/vans can nab you when you’re driving toward them or away from them,...and at very great distances too if they so desire. They can have their vans/equipment set-up in various ways plus they have discrete handheld equipment as well.

Probably best to suck-it up and deal with whatever censure they impose.

Assuming you don’t live in Scotland you should (37mph) be offered a ‘speed awareness course’ or 3-points and a fine.

I think the speed awareness courses stiil need to be completed via ‘online’ video call; it takes about 2.5hrs and costs £100’ish but NO POINTS!.

Before CV19 the classroom course took 4hrs plus travel etc,..so it’s not all bad news. 😁

As I understand it if you are offered the online course you are able to take it anywhere in the country and they do differ in price so choose the one that is most MSE.
Remember the saying: if it looks too good to be true it almost certainly is.

It's worth bearing in mind - a single SP30 offence on an otherwise clean licence will usually have only a very small impact on your insurance premiums, with most insurers.  So even if you don't get offered a course, it's no reason to get unduly upset, it really won't be the end of the world.
