On my FB page today, amongst all the other links which I know to be genuine, one came up from the - Marriage Allowance Check.
Does anyone know if this is genuine, because just answering a few simple questions, suggests that I could be due up to £1220.00.
As yet I have not filled in any personal details.
Thanks.

Yes marriage allowance exists but you can apply for it direct. No need to use a third party company that will take half of your money.

Oh never respond to facebook ads, nearly always scams

They will charge a fee of 42% PLUS £100 (both including VAT) for something that you can do yourself here:

Anyone who applies for it can only ever pay the same or more tax, never less.

It is the recipient, not the applicant who could get a refund.

So if you apply it is your spouse who would be the beneficiary.

Each tax year is looked at separately and it is upto you/your spouse to check if it is beneficial for you, as a couple.  HMRC do not do that, they simply act on any application that is made.
  • HMRC site actually explains it quite succinctly:

’ To benefit as a couple, you need to earn less than your partner and have an income of £12,570 or less. Your partner’s income must be between £12,501 and £50,270 (£43,662 in Scotland) for you to be eligible.’

Absolutely steer clear of any of these refund companies, their fees are ridiculous

My wife earns £8000 and I drawdown £12000. We both have allowances of 12369.(12570 - 201 untaxed interest.) I would like to take more drawdown and use marriage allowance in order to pay less tax. Can my wife give me her unused allowance before I increase drawdown? On my online HMRC personal tax account I can update my 'estimated income' will this suffice until I decide how much income I require. Also will my code return to 12570 + marriage allowance taking into account my interest allowance

No, she cannot fine you her "unused allowances".

She can apply for Marriage Allowance and that means she gets a reduced Personal Allowance of £11,310.  So she still wouldn't pay any tax.

You will retain a Personal Allowance of £12,570 but will get a tax reduction of £262 of your tax liability.

If you do plan on increasing your drawdown then updating your estimated income is important as you may well no longer need the coding deduction for untaxed interest (if you have no spare allowances then the interest will be taxed at the savings starter rate of tax, 0% in 2021:22).

Note -  If you apply the other party gets the  increased allowances and any tax credit due and you lose some of your prsonal allowance.

Make sure the correct person applies.

Is that what I should have charged my BIL/SIL for the <10 minutes of my life I spent filling in the on line form for them ?
