Any suggestions why this appears to be a contradiction please?.

I have a chomebook that I thought was sluggish, EE sent me a smart router to replace my 6yr old one, connected ok on Saturday, thought I would powerwash chromebook today and have. Ran a speedtest and it's thus:- Ping 17 Download 55.65 Upload 18.48 Yet the little clock states WEAK SIGNAL. To me that seems odd. Any idea's please?.

Sounds right to me. 

A weak WiFi signal could still achieve 55mbps but it is still a weak signal. 

A strong 802.11ac signal will easily get 750mbps or more. 

Not sure what your broadband speed is capable of and whether the 55mbps you are getting is the WiFi or the broadband maxing out?

Your broadband connection provides Internet connectivity to your home.
A WiFi network provides Internet connectivity to devices in your home.

Weak WiFi signal does usually mean lower bandwidth. Presumably you would experience lower latency and higher bandwidth with a better WiFi signal, depending on what your local radio frequency environment is like on the 2.4GHz and 5GHz WiFi bands.
