"According to the Daily Express"
Must be true then.4 -

Must be true then. Not just in the Express, Times and Telegraph also saying it but can't see much beyond that. Supposedly to make NI be more inclusive, suppose there is an amusing irony that NI will likely soon be in a position where they must hold a referendum on reunification. Polling in May suggests 44% support a vote vs 39% against; there is a 47/42 no/yes for reunification overall at the moment but it's 46/47 no/yes among the under 45s0 -
Give it a few years, and we'll have a new "England and Wales" plate.
If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.2 -
It's not up to the government.
The international vehicle identification codes are maintained by the UN, and are largely aligned with ISO3166, managed by the International Standards Organisation.
The UK is GB on vehicle identifiers and under ISO3166-2, and GBR under ISO3166-3.
Changing from GB to UK may not be acceptable because of the risk of confusion with Ukraine - UA on vehicle identifiers and under ISO3166-2, but UKR under ISO3166-3.
The logic behind the desire to change is obvious... New plates cannot be legally made with the blue EU GB strip since the start of this year, but there's no legal precedent to allow them to be retrospectively barred. But if the nationality code changes, "GB" identification could be barred... It's the will of (37.5% of) the people, allegedly.3 -

The Telegraph article does not suggest this is in anyway an agreed change, merely a unilateral announcement. That's not the way the world works, however much BJ Piffle may wish it did.poppasmurf_bewdley said:

"However, the Government has now notified the UN that it plans to change the letters needed abroad from “GB” to “UK”.
...
An AA member is believed to have made the discovery by accident while searching for a piece of UN legislation. It's understood the Government made the change last week."0 -
I've seen a 70 plate with the EU GB marker not sure if the is legal to make and fit.

70 plate started in September last year, so perfectly legal if it was first registered between Sept and the end of Dec.2

When I collected my new caravan on March 31st this year, it had been fitted with a brand new number plate as above but still with the EU emblazoned up it. Needless to say, it became the shortest lived plate ever to despoil any vehicle in Britain. But it does show how little some dealers are aware of the current number plate regulations.rdr said:I've seen a 70 plate with the EU GB marker not sure if the is legal to make and fit.
Incidentally, the UK plate will complement the new UK driving licence which now features UK in place of the EU roundel.
