Hello, I am looking for some advice on how to use my smartphone abroad for day to day use without incurring large costs? What are the common ways?

you could look at what packages your provider has for overseas usage or purchase a prepaid SIM card in the country you will be in
there is an article here https://www.moneysavingexpert.com/mobiles/cheap-roaming-calls/1 -

If so, your current package may include some roaming calls, texts and data within the UK package.
I know there has been a lot in the press about an end to free roaming, but the detail is rather more nuanced. I think one of the articles I read on one of the providers said there would be a limit of 25GB date if abroad. For most purposes, that is actually a lot of data. Obviously, if an individual will be streaming large amounts of video, then the data may be consumed and the bills mount up.1 -
For specific advice you should mention your destination(s), duration and frequency of travel, your current provider and whether single/dual SIM handset.
Within Europe you can probably still use your normal UK tariff allowances, although fair usage for data is being reduced by networks and roaming charges will return over time, as EU regulations no longer apply.Evolution, not revolution1
