Hi, when we purchased our current property 6 months ago. The hb survey mentioned asbestos in ceililgs, some insulation sheets and the gas boiler.
The ceilings and insulation sheets have been tested and they do not contain asbestos, how do we find out if the gas boiler an ancient glowarm contains asbestos ? The boiler is due servicing in a few months but we want it out sooner.
Tia.

Get some quotes for the boiler replacing, he/she should be asbestos aware and advise accordingly.Sorry I can't think of anything profound, clever or witty to write here.1

Actually, some heating installers are asbestos clueless. And only a licensed asbestos company can handle asbestos.
OP, maybe call the manufacturers direct, find out exactly where the asbestos is in the machine and what type of asbestos it is.

If a surveyor mentions 'gas boiler' and 'asbestos' in the same paragraph then I'd expect the reference to be more likely to be an asbestos/asbestos cement flue, although it is possible that older models have linings or other components containing asbestos.
What is the exact comment made in the survey? And can you post pictures of the boiler and flue?

Just ask the boiler installers if they are competent working with asbestos, the installers that are will have no problem answering your question and able to show documentation to confirm their competence.
Others could try to avoid giving an answer, beware.Choose Stabila !2 -
OK, had 4 companies visit & quote for a new boiler and associated asbestos works.
News is th e boiler does not contain asbestos (although a contains asbestos label is stuck on the enamel case door).
Quote 1, it does not contain asbestos and showed me their reference material and allowed me to copy it.
Quote 2, it contains some asbestos but they all do !.
Quote 3, has asbestos cord gaskets and a further charge will be made.
Quote 4, its nothing to worry about !
Why was i told by a surveyor when purchasing the property that there were many instances of asbestos requiring professional removal ?
Happy in one way but sad in a few other ways as the vendor accepted a discounted price for the property.
Whilst having the quotes it was mentioned i will need new pipes everywhere and radiators (they are ancient serrvowarm rads) . Which i will make another thread.
Thanks for all the help

Because it is true (of older models) and surveyors have to err on the side of caution.
Whether or not an individual boiler will have asbestos-containing parts depends on the make and model, but also what parts have been fitted or removed since it was new.
Even if a boiler model is not known to have asbestos as manufactured, it doesn't mean that the installer - or someone doing subsequent maintenance work - hasn't introduced asbestos-containing parts. Hence the need for taking a cautious approach.
Did they confirm what material the flue is made from?
