P11D - what?!

I received my P11D from my employer today for 2020/2021.

The final figure shows -£540.

What does this mean lol? Do I owe this? Is it a refund?

Bit of background - I left my employer at the start of June to take another position on secondment for 12 months. I have a contract that states the position I have just left is mine to return to next year but they have had to provide me with a P45 in order for new position to be paid correctly as I've moved from one local authority to another and they use different pay grades (new position is a pay grade that my old employer doesn't have and can't match). So I've been 'let go' but with it contractually stated that I will return to the position they've terminated me from in 12 months time - this has allowed the secondment position to take me on as a new starter rather than as a transferee if that makes sense.

Did you change jobs in June 2020 or June 2021

The P11D  refers to a benefit that you received for the year  6 April 2020 to 5 April 2021

I moved to my secondment in June 2021 but it's with a different local authority to the one I have been employed with for the last 4yrs.

The P11D refers to benefit you received last tax year. Nothing to do with your switch of employment.

If the amount was included in your tax code last year then any tax due on it will have been paid through your PAYE.

iF it was not included in your code number last year then tax will be payable on that amount.

When your employer sent the P11D to you he would also send a copy to HMRC so they can check if any tax is payable on it.

Isn't the op querying why it is a negative figure?

    The final figure shows -£540.

The comments I post are my personal opinion. While I try to check everything is correct before posting, I can and do make mistakes, so always try to check official information sources before relying on my posts.

Did you have a car provided by the local authority or do mileage in your own car. Some LA have historic "fixed rate profit car schemes" and return negative benefits to show the amount of tax relief you can claim. Others will show you the difference between the approved mileage rates (45p for the first 10,000 business miles in your own car) and what they actually paid you (say 15p per mile). They can be funny beasts the old local authorities - get hold of the old HR and ask them why it is negative. They should provide the actual reason.
