NHS App (England) - appointment booking

Since getting the NHS app I've found prescriptions are so much easier to deal with.
I have tried to book an appointment once or twice on it and its always said nothings available. Tried the other day and suddenly it allowed me to book but only a cervical smear test. Now I have to admit I've never had one but as a 40 year old guy I don't think that means I'm over due.
I'm sure this is a surgery level issue but how do others find appointment booking on the NHS app?

Believe it depends on whether the surgery takes it or not.

I've not tried it via the NHS app but my surgery only allows routine appointments to be made online which can be anything from 3 weeks or more to wait. I still call if I need to see, or rather via a telephone appointment, a doctor more urgently.0

We have to go via triage at the moment so it has to be a phone call. In normal times it was done online.Tall, dark & handsome. Well two out of three ain't bad.1

Sadly it is the sign of the times, and some surgeries use app A and some app B and the NHS app is trying to bridge the differences but until they get their act together then the phone is the only way generally, and then you have the appointments for hospitals....When we have 95% FTTP it will probably be still the same, yes I am a cynic or is that a realist? Still Dido Harding will make them all like TalkTalk (sic) if anyone can trace her and contact her ...heavy cynicism4.8kWp 12x400W Longhi 9.6 kWh battery Giv-hy 5.0 Inverter, WSW facing Essex . Prior to the current situation you would phone the surgery and the only appointments were in 2 or 3 weeks time.Check the online booking and that would be a similar story. If you book online in the evening or early hours
you could get an appointment before 10am, sometimes with several choices of doctor.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -

Ultimately did call... was 16th in the queue, appointment booked for 7:40am on Monday as a non-urgent appointment. Just would be nice to book without the 45 minute queue on the phone and bemused by the app offering males smear test0
