Hi. Just about to get the survey back. Have already spoken to the surveyor who indicated various issues. Looks like the written survey will advise getting a couple of experts to quote eg electrician and roofer. My question is do tradesmen charge for giving such quotes which they must realise is to just give an idea of how much it would cost in order to renegotiate the price? Or am I missing something?

Yes they often charge (not always).
But it's completely standard in any survey to be told to get electricians, plumbers, etc to check things. After all, the surveyor doesn't have those skills, training or knowledge. Unless it's a new build, its unlikely anything will meet current regs.2024 wins: *must start comping again!*1 -
I would be surprised if you got a tradesperson out to do a free quote without any promise of work. Never mind the cost, given how busy they are at the moment I'd be surprised if one came out at all. I'm struggling to get people out and I own my house and actually need the work done. Whether they will come out and then charge for it will be up to individual tradespeople. I know a lot of people who get someone out to cost the work listed on a Homebuyers usually get a family member who's in the trades to do it.1

Some do, some don't.
Be aware that the EA may well counter with "the asking already reflects the need for some necessary works"If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales1
