Becoming a landlord, switching & refunds

Hi,

First time poster here so apologies in advance if I inadvertently offend or deviate from protocol.

I'm looking for advice in relation to energy suppliers and letting a property.  I have a domestic property which was previously my family home that I am in the process of renovating with a view to letting for rent.  Since the property has been empty for some time I have accumulated significant credit with my energy provider.  I have tried contacting them by phone and by email/support ticket with a few to arranging a refund.  However, I have been unbale to get a response of any kind.

I did consider simply switching to a new provider but, given that I am looking to let the property in the next 6-8 weeks, would this be the correct/prudent thing to do?  I have no previous experience in this area so I am hoping that someone out there can help or suggest a way forward. Thank you.

    I think your best option is to contact the current supplier and say you are moving out when the new tenancy starts and provide up to date meter readings then the account will be closed and the final payment taken or refund issued. 

    The tenant will then contact the supplier to sign up for an account then it’s over to them.

    Edit: It’s a bit worrying they won’t answer emails or phone calls, who is the supplier? Can you at least let them know you are moving out on your online account when the time comes?

    Be with your tenant when they move in -  as Beer says give your present supplier the meter reads (like you have been doing) photo the meter  and give your tenant details of the present supplier who they must contact - then they can switch suppliers.

    Thank you for your speedy reply, I'll follow your advice.  I wasn't sure if I could name names so erred on the side of caution. In answer to your second question, yes, I can inform them online.  In fact, that appears to be only way you can reliably interact with them.  Many thanks.
