So installation of a Q box as an upgrade always requires a change of dish or LNB?No free lunch, and no free laptop

Certainly needs a new LNB and since most Sky dishes are getting old and rusty, the fitters usually change at the same time. A couple of years ago ,you could ask for a hybrid LNB to be fitted which would allow the use of the original HD/SD boxes as well as/ instead of the Q system but I'm led to believe that the Sky fitters are "discouraged" from offering the option nowadays!!macman said:So installation of a Q box as an upgrade always requires a change of dish or LNB?0 -

You don't need a new dish. Unless its covered in rust, it'll be fine. It'll be just a new LNB and maybe new cables (though I suspect existing Sky+HD cables are fine for Q). The hybrid LNB mentioned above may be discouraged by Sky, though some forum posts suggest you can request it prior to install. if you ask really nicely (and provide copious amounts of tea and biscuits) you may get a hybrid (you may get one anyway if that's all they have on the van). But put the request in before they turn up if that's what you want.
