Notice of intended prosecution for traffic offence

I have just received a letter from the metropolitan police titled ‘notice of intended prosecution’
What they have stated down is all gobedy gook to me:
‘ Drive on road other than motorway, fail comply with red/green arrow/ lane closure light signals- automatic equipment Section 36 (1) of the Road Traffic Act 1988, the Traffic Signs Regulations and General Directions 2016 and Schedule 2 of the Road Traffic Offenders Act 1988.
Recorded time into Red: 0.9 seconds.
Basically on looking at the cctv camera photos they have of my car, what I believed happened was I was driving up a busy main road, and went to do a left turn, but just as I was about to turn, I saw (a few meters ahead of me) the sign posts that prohibit you from entering a zone during a particular time of the day (often at the start and end of school hours). When I saw that sign, I quickly corrected my direction back onto the main road without ever transgressing into that zone. Prior to turning to the left, there were no signs indicating the potential of entering a possible traffic controlled zone.
the way the road has been laid out is really dangerous as there is no signage warning you run the risk of entering a time controlled zone if you turn left off a busy high street. What I found myself doing was - I started to turn left, suddenly saw the signage and quickly went back onto the main road so as to not enter the prohibited zone.
the bottom line is, how do I go about finding out what exactly my offence was and what can I do to challenge it?

The Website says the only way to challenge it is to actually go to court, but I can’t afford to do this. The only option they give me is basically admit to the offence (what ever that was and it lasted for 0.9 seconds) and pay to go on a course or get prosecuted and have points off my license. It seems like daylight robbery.
any advice would be very much appreciated.
