When to register for self assessment

I read somewhere that you need to register with HMRC within 3 months of starting a new venture, but when I've gone on to the Gov.UK site, the registration process all seems to be talking about people who need to register for filing for tax year 20/21, so now I'm confused, Can I leave it while after next April to register, as long as I file before the following January?

Just to clarify what I mean about the Gov.uk site, under the heading Set up as a sole trader, it gives 3 criteria which if any apply I need to register. The first is if you earned more than £ 1000 between 6 April 2020 and 5 April 2021, well I didn't its a new venture. Then further along in the register for self assessment, it says Register by 5 October in your business's second tax year. 

This would seem to suggest that the original advice of having to register within 3 months of starting a venture is incorrect, am I right?

It used to be that you had to register quickly after starting the business (note it was after starting not after making money). The rules were relaxed a while back that its now 5th Oct before your first tax return is due. Self employment under £1,000 revenue (not profit) doesn't have to be declared
