Prank Bank App Scam😣

thanks for that. So it seems someone from facebook asks you to install a 'banking app' apk from an unknown source by ticking an 'install from unknown source' option...born_again said:
Just tick enable the Install from Unknown Sources. Pretty easy.pbartlett said:i am no expert but don't you have to go through quite a lot of settings hoops and bypass android security to install any non-playstore apk, scam or not ?
android normally will simply not allow you to install a rogue apk.
Remember this is on the other person phone & not the seller.

It's not the OP that's installed anything. The scammer has the fake app installed on their phone and hands their phone to OP to enter OP's bank details. The money appears to leave the scammer's account (shown on the app on the scammer's phone) so OP felt comfortable to release the goods. Of course the money never went anywhere...pbartlett said:

sometimes i dispair ...
OP's own error (which they've acknowledged) was not to check their own account before releasing the goods, to ensure the money had arrived.
It's a good scam, I can see why people fall for it, especially if it's framed with some preceding charm.6 -
No. That is how you install a unofficial APK on your phone.pbartlett said:

In the case such as the OP's. The app is on the buyers phone. So could just be something they have created. Easy enough to create a app if you know what you are doing.Life in the slow lane2 -
ah ok thanks everyone i understand now1

Sorry, the app is on the buyers phone not the sellers phone. As the buyer enters the details themselves in a very realistic looking app the buyer feels convinced it is legitimate.
yes moral of the story do not part with goods until funds available. An honest would wait.0 -
There’s a lot of armchair experts out there who can always profess the right thing to do. Unfortunately if you’re just not experienced in something, wouldn’t guess this was a possibility, had only done transfers which had worked perfectly you just wouldn’t know. When you’re in the situation it’s a different experience.pbartlett said:

yes my comments were related to installing random apk files on your phone but now understand it was the seller who had the app, not the buyer.0

So, you don't need to install anything from unkown source as a quick internet search shows that the official Play store for Android has Fake Bank so you can fool girls into thinking that you are extremely rich. Probably not a foundation for a long-term matching.0

I got caught out by this today and feel like an absolute idiot!
Sold an Xbox to a guy from Facebook Marketplace, came to my house, did a so called bank transfer and it didn’t go through so I called the bank to check who actually told me it could take up to 2 hours to come through, as long as I get confirmation the transaction was sent it will be fine to give the goods. Stupidly I gave him the Xbox.Reported to the police but I’ve got no cctv, only the guys Facebook profile which I’m now blocked to view and a mobile number which is off. I don’t expect anything back from this. If anything I can’t believe I fell for it and was stupid enough to give it to him. Lesson learnt2
