I'd probably pay the 1k to avoid further threats, try to record future phone calls, and in all honesty, perhaps prepare to write this off and think you may need to find another firm.

My folks just had their front patio done, using someone who did their back patio about 10 years ago. Looks decent and they had lots of people asking the guy for info. If you see some driveways near you that look decent and are new perhaps knock and ask who did it? And don't be surprised to wait even a few months.

I do have full video and audio recording of the threats, luckily the threats were made in front of my video door bell!

Racist threats can be a serious crime. When people start making threats it shows what sort of a cowboy firm they are.

In that case I would contact your local policing team and show it to them.

    Strongly Agree!

The OP knew that from their original shoddy attempt.

This kind of thing is a regular summer occurrence in Essex, then people move on. But not before threatening people and their properties so they pay up and are scared to talk. The giveaway is that they canvas you for business.

Good. Report the threats to the police.
    . . .I did not speak out

    Then they came for me
And there was no one left
    To speak out for me..

Time to get someone else to put it right.
If you are speaking to him again or paying calmly let him know that if he has any idea of damaging your property you have a legal recording of his presence and threats that is in a secure place. Don't get into a discussion about it if he mouths off. If you find you can't keep quiet then just repeat that statement.
Presumably they aren't a local firm or even the district.
It's worth paying the extra for good reputation or if you can't afford it diy-ing.

Thanks Folks just wanted to give an overview of the entire situation,

The company are locally based (3 miles away from me) they have been trading for over 15 years (apparently), as I mentioned previously I checked out their reviews on checkatrade, mybuilder etc which all showed positive. They were getting 2/3 reviews every month all rated 10 out of 10.

    Here is the relaid patio, it is looking better but has the following issues;

    1) Multiple slabs seem to be loose, if you step on the edge or corner of one the subsequent side lift up.

    2) There are still a few slabs that are not level.

The company said 'this is as best as your going to get, no one will be able to do it better'

Today I am planning to get some quotes to get this repaired.

The pictures below show the relaid patio, as well as the base they created. This time I did see them use the 'whackker' machine on the base before laying the patio...

So they’ve just laid the slabs on top of sand?  Wow!

I’ve just had 2 patios laid by a fantastic team of guys. They properly prepared and compacted a thick hardcore base and then bedded the slabs in a thick bed of mortar, using levels and rubber mallets to adjust the slabs to the correct height.

My patios will last for years, yours is likely to look like it’s been hit by an earthquake in no time at all and you’ll be plagued with weeds coming up between the slabs.
