Rusty Chimnea (dont want to paint)

Hi folks, just wondering if there is another option for my rusty chimnea other than to paint with jet black stove paint. When I wirewool the rust away, unde the rust there is the original finish which is black but with bits of brassy/bronzy colour showing through (was like this when new) and if I paint over it ill lose this effect. Is there any other option to protect this from rusting like some kind of clear heat resistant laquer? Or should I just leave it but keep wirewooling the rust off (its not thick rust, kinda surface rust).
Thank you in advance.

You could try Stove Black - A mix of waxes and carbon pigments that is rubbed over the stove (chimnea), buffed to a shine, and then burnt on when the fire is next lit. How well it will last outside, I wouldn't like to say.
An alternative I have seen suggested once or twice is a black boot/shoe polish - Perhaps worth a try ?

As above, I would use grate polish (it's what I use for the fireback and grate in our open fire.  I'm not aware of any clear coating that won't turn black immediately.
  • Thank you folks ;) Will take a look at stove black
