Will car insurance company backdate insurance premium for offence from 3 years ago?

On 28th Oct 2018, I was stopped for no insurance.. then there was a long battle... then covid happened (and delays). Last Friday 25th June 2021, I finally had my trial and pleaded guilty (as advised by my lawyer). The points will come off 28th Oct 2021, and my insurance renews 7th Oct 2021.
I know I need to tell my insurance company ASAP, and Im guessing the half-wits will ask why I didn't already declare them.. so I'll need to get some proof from the court.. that they literally just gave them to me, my license was clean before this.
Will the insurance company backdate the premium to the beginning of the policy start date 7th Oct 2020 or will they increase it from now till the end only? I was insured with them for the year before too.. will they also recalculate the premium for that year inc the new 8 points and ask me to pay.
What would have been the case if it was a different insurer.. would they have been alerted and attempted to charge me?
When I renew on 7th Oct.. as the points are only for 3 weeks.. will they charge me like the points are on for the whole year.. or will there only be a slight increase?

How would you refer to someone who drove without insurance?
You should have already notified the insurer the minute you knew there was a pending prosecution. So, they should be aware of it and ready to make adjustments based on the outcome. Will the insurance company backdate the premium to the beginning of the policy start date 7th Oct 2020 or will they increase it from now till the end only? You may even find the one you insured with the year before come after you for an increase as well. When I renew on 7th Oct.. as the points are only for 3 weeks.. will they charge me like the points are on for the whole year.. or will there only be a slight increase?Whilst points are usually four years, do not be surprised to be asked about your 5 year history with many insurers. The premium is based on the snapshot when the insurance is due. So, it will be increased on the basis of you having 8 points and prosecution for no insurance.

An IN10 conviction means that some insurers will not want to cover you at any price, so you should be prepared for the possibility that they might cancel your cover when you tell them.
If you were asked to declare pending prosecutions when you took the policy out and didn't, that would also be grounds for them to cancel the policy rather than just recalculate the premium.
To avoid the risk of a cancelled policy that I would have to declare forevermore, in your shoes I might be tempted to cancel my insurance myself, swallow any cancellation charges and take out a new policy with the conviction properly declared. Remember that under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act insurers can ask you to declare it for five years from date of CONVICTION, though many may only ask for five years from date of offence.
Probably best not to call the call centre staff halfwits when you speak to them. At least they had the good sense not to drive without insurance.5 -
The above responses are spot on - and I echo the comments; it's rather ironic to call the people providing you with a service half-wits when they most likely have their insurance in good order...

Thank you for your replies o jobsworth super obedient British citizens.
I probably shouldn't have used half-wits, but I did read experiences of other people on here.. how they try to be upfront, honest and play ball, but get stung by the advisor. Not only they wantt o listen, they have no idea how driving offences work.
Mind you half the people on MSE would probably behave in the same way, since they are perfect.0 -
First of all, they aren't advisors... almost all consumer insurance is sold on a non-advised basis. This almost creates a risk that if you over train the staff they'll be tempted to go beyond the call script and likely to fall into the trap of advising. A half-wit at a previous client got a disciplinary for saying "nice car" when a customer called for a quote on a ferrari they were considering buying (the disciplinary was subsequently reversed after getting involved in the matter).
Secondly, one of the consequences of everyone wanting to pay as little as possible for their insurance is that costs are cut so those "half wits" are generally working in a high pressure environment for relatively low pay. As above, small comments can be a black mark on a 3 strikes and your out system.
They will ask for the date of conviction and so you are relatively timely in declaring it to them. The impact won't be backdated before the date of conviction because you didn't have a conviction before then.
Remember going forward however that irrespective of when the points come off your license the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act means that you have to declare the conviction for 5 years from the date of conviction not the date of the offence and so don't "forget" in the future else the "half wit" next time is likely to be cancelling your policy for non-declaration.2 -
being honest and being advised by the half wit they will cancelling your insurance or increasing the price is not being stung, it's paying the price of your mistake.
You really do not want a cancelled by insurer on your file, because that is permanent and needs to be declared indefinitely at this time for any insurance product when asked"It is prudent when shopping for something important, not to limit yourself to Pound land/Estate Agents"

This certainly seems to be a post by somebody who always sees themselves as the victim and everybody who disagrees with their point of view is a half wit.
