Hi,
I am starting a new business providing after-school clubs to school children. I was wondering whether I will need public liability insurance, and what is the best way to go about obtaining this?
thanks

Speak to an insurance broker and ensure that you get the correct cover for the business.0

In most scenarios PL insurance is recommended rather than mandatory, though you can be contractually required to hold it by venues etc. I've never seen the list of trades where it is an actual legal requirement but wouldnt be surprised if childcare wasnt on the list and if it isnt then I'd be surprised that the local council doesnt require it for any licenses etc.
Speak to a broker... there are a few true direct players in the market but they are more aimed at your trades people where there is the volume to support the market entry costs. Some brokers do specialise in certain industries etc but plenty of generalist out there too.
If you dont get insurance and a kid ends up in a wheelchair your talking potentially 70 years of care you'd have to be paying for if you dont have insurance.0 -
As someone who helped set up two such clubs when the boys were younger, the thought of not having adequate insurance in place would have scared me witless ...
Public liability, Employers Liability, Premises (including theft of equipment) - yes speaking to a broker would be a good first step.Signature removed for peace of mind0 -
This is an organisation offering advice and help for before and after school clubs. They offer 'discounted' insurance which could be worth comparing to what a broker can offer

Just as a view from a parent, I take a keen eye on anyone who is in control of my kids. I would expect any kind of kids club to have insurance in place and would deem it unprofessional if they didn't and would consequently not allow my kids to attend. A great selling point for your business would be to put that you are insured.0
