South Wales

We’re stopping near Merthyr Tydfil in school holidays with children, planning on going to the castle in the town and walking in the Brecon Beacons, Pen Y fan and the 4 waterfalls, maybe Barry Island for the day.

Can anyone recommend other places/ things to do in the area.

Thank You

Cardiff has plenty to offer, both city centre and the Bay.

National Museum, Castle, Rugby stadium tour.

Big Pit in Blaenavon and St Fagans near Cardiff (both excellent) are both free.

    Thanks all

I had made a mental note of big pit

    some great suggestions
  • Further east,   there is Raglan Castle,  Chepstow Castle,  Tintern Abbey and the Roman Remains in Caerleon - Fortress, Baths and Amphitheatre.    The towns of Abergavenny is worth a look as is Usk and Crickhowel.   If you're into books Hay on Wye is also not far.

    Have a good holiday.

St Fagan's is a must & in keeping with MSE, it's free though you do need to book ahead given the current climate.

Thanks, been having a look into suggestions and I thought we would be a bit stuck for places to go but looks mesmerising. Only been to North Wales before but enjoyed it.

Agree with the suggestions above St Fagans is a must.

Brecon is a great nearby town to visit also -from there you can hire an electric boat for the day and explore the  beautiful Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal - travelling at max speed of 2.5 miles per hour the kids can safely drive the boat .

Great local dairy Llanfaes has an ice cream parlour in Brecon too

and the Brecon Mountain Railway is close by.
