I'd have to pay for the car but not take it then go home and buy the policy then go back for the car.
Why would you have to go home to buy the policy?

to do it online and so get the cheapest quote plus possible cashback
Does the dealership not have computers or an Internet connection?

All do but you answer both questions from the date of the policy inception

If you were moving address next week and getting a new car the following week you'd also get the quotes for it at the new address because it'll never be at the old address.

Surely the obvious answer is to buy the new car and insure it on the Direct Line policy, keep the old one until the insurance expires and then scrap it.
