Do you reckon I got the job?

Done an interview for a 1 year contract role. Was told it was between me and someone else and they are looking to move quickly. This was Tuesday last week where I was told I would get a response the next day. Heard nothing and now the recruiter has dropped me an email saying she wants to discuss my interview tomorrow.

Personally, I think if I got it I would have been told the next day. Think what's happened is either the recruiter is late in getting back to me in telling me the no decision or they wanted to complete the checks on the other candidate before telling me no.

EDIT: This is an internal recruiter BTW.

I think maybe you didn't get that job but there is another role they think you might be interested in.

When any employer says they will let you know by X, they almost always will let the successful candidate know by X, and will leave everybody else hanging in case something goes wrong in the referencing process. So sadly, I think that you haven't got this one.

There's an outside chance that it will come your way if the other candidate has gone for another role or failed referencing.

You cannot predict these things.... a decline is always slower coming than an accept so instantly it doesn't bode well. That said, curve balls can happen and an offer get delayed going out the door. Can be an offer is made, then declined and so you offer to your second choice (one of the reasons declines are slower). Could be the agent knew a few days ago and not priority as a decline but has another role to discuss with you. Can be the process so far has selected a winner so they now want another round/test or such to help decide.... tomorrow will tell

It's rare for employers to notify unsuccessful applicants. My feeling is the successful applicant has changed their mind and the interviewer is now going down the list.

    Good luck!

That's not true. I've always been advised. Especially when the employer has told me they'd get in touch. Whether it was good or bad news.

If I were the OP here, I'd think I'd had a lucky escape as the employer is totally unreliable, telling people they will be contacted when they won't be.

^ I can recall reading several stories in the papers about people applying for tens of jobs without getting a single reply.

Its rare to get anything from a simple application if its a decline, its much more unusual to not get anything after an interview (and even more so if its a 2nd round interview or such)

Once the person has the job then me as an employer would be speaking to you. The recruiters job is done and they await their full fee should the employee last x number of months/pass probation.

I've had some experience of recruiters, I went out with one for a while too, I would say they will give 'some' feedback, although don't expect much and they have another role you will be suited for. Because you came so close this time they have cash signs in their eyes and see you as a sure thing. Good luck.

If you were first choice for the job you would have been told by the recruiter that you have been successful.  The recruiter's comment regarding talking to you about the interview could mean there is an alternative job or could just be that the potential employer has provided them with feedback.

When it comes to an interview, I am mostly told whether I got the job or not but most of the time it's just done by email. If I am told over the phone, it's the recruiter calling me out of the blue and not an arranged call. I think they are probably just going the extra mile and giving candidates verbal feedback instead of a generic email. Would prefer if they just sent you an email.
