Insinkerator, yay or nay?

We are having our kitchen done, and insinkerator was high on my wish list. There’s 6 of us, including 4 fussy kids so the leftover scraps are high. I hate the food bin. Kids miss and food goes everywhere.

I was looking at an Evo 150/250 as there’s an offer on them from a supplier but a plumber has just said don’t ever get one, they need rodding constantly as they get clogged etc.

Any real life experiences with them? Thanks

How good are your drains?  You also must run plenty of water when using to avoid blockages.

We have one, and we have no problem with the drains.
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?

We've had them for about 12 years now, never had a problem with them or any blocked drains.

Something that's an absolute must for us now, it is so useful. We don't have any food waste collections where we are.
  • The drains are not bad, this is really the one thing I really wanted in the kitchen so I’m glad to hear people don’t have issues with them! I wonder if the plumber was referring to the old chop ones which left food in bigger pieces? Modern ones grind to less than a grain of rice so I was surprised he thought it’d clog so much! We don’t tend to have bones etc either, mostly either veg peel or leftover cooked veg/potatoes etc.
  • 1. They're excellent.
    2. Always run cold water through when grinding.
    3. Provided the drain has a normal clear run it won't clog.  However, don't put onions down, the skins are too fine and will clog.
    4. If you have a ceramic sink, check with the manufacturer of the sink before fitting.  Blanco, for example, told me they wouldn't guarantee the sink if a waste disposal is fitted.  Apparently they are not designed to take the vibration.

The one I had experience of, you needed a large hole to let food down.  Large enough that a little slip up with the cover and you also had cutlery down it - and that was not good for it, or the cutlery...

We have had this waste disposer since we moved in 23 years ago. Yes, we do get cutlery in it, which is bad for the cutlery, but doesn't seem to harm the waste disposer (yet!).  The only stuff that gets damaged is teaspoons. Anything bigger than that would stick out of the top, so it would be obvious, and we wouldn't turn it on.

As I'm having my kitchen redone soon, I thought I might investigate:

    https://youtu.be/Lq6LOVN5fTY

Sticking food into the water system feels inherently wrong - I'm thinking fatbergs here. The video says it can be converted to biogas, not that it necessarily will.

Eta: this look perfectly disgusting and makes no sense. You can stick cream down it but not oils? I dread to think how it would smell if it ever broke down / needed dismantling.

    Verdict: big fat gimmick.

Yes, it's basically people putting crap down the sink because they are too lazy to walk to the bin.
