Santander charge for debit card

I've just opened a Chip Easy Access Savings Account (1.5% Interest), the money (£5000) was transfered via my Santander Debit Card.
Santander has classed this as a Foreign Currency Transfer, although the transaction was in GBP, and charged me over £70.
I have challenged it with the Bank and still waiting to hear.
Is this normal practice for all banks?

Is this normal practice for all banks? If the vendor bills it in a foreign currency then its normal practice for banks to convert to Sterling and charge accordingly. The whole thing is automated and controlled by the Vendor (Chip in this case)
You may wish to check with Chip to see why they haven't collected it in Sterling.

I'm a user of Chip (with HSBC) and I've never had this issue - I'd definitely get in touch with them about this.
I'm presuming you've got a UK address and a UK bank account?0
