Exactly what happened to a friend of mine - last year she was unable to leave home for 2 months due to health reasons (not Covid related) but during that time her app pinged notifying her that she had been in contact with someone who had tested positive. She lives above a small supermarket and so can only assume that someone from the shop below had tested positive .
she obviously knew she was OK if she hadn't been out but am puzzled as to why people have the app on if they aren't going out or going to be anywhere near anyone?
I turned off tracing within a few days of realising it was not required to use it to sign in to venues and even if it was, an app notification does not mean you're legally required to self-isolate.

    A complete waste of time.

A lot of people are not very tech savvy and may not have thought of turning it off, or may have assumed that it wouldn't ping unless you are genuinely close to someone so there's no reason not to leave it on.

And of course if you don't turn it off, you don't need to remember to turn it bac k on when you do leave the house. !
